The Arizona Golf Resort & Conference Center has a long and interesting history and has been in existence long before Phoenix was the city that it is today. It was purchased by the Tidan Group of Companies in April, 2007.
Prior to the purchase, the Resort was privately owned by Jack Lake. Mr. Lake was involved in the operation and development of the property since the 1960’s. There was nothing much out in this area except the Resort, then known as “Golden Hills Country Club” and Leisure World across the street. Power Road was called Bush Highway and Southern Avenue was not paved to the east. There were no freeways and few traffic lights. The name of the property was changed to Arizona Golf Resort & Conference Center in the early 80’s.
In the early 1960’s only the Golf Course, 200’s series of guest rooms and the Clubhouse existed. The Resort catered to many winter visitors who often stayed several months and returned each year to enjoy the sun and play golf. General Motors Proving Ground and Williams Air Force Base were major clients. There was little in the way of shopping and very few restaurants.
Additional accommodations were added in the late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s with the newest suites, known as the 700’s, opening in January 1996 in time to accommodate Super Bowl guests.
In 1978 the Resort was purchased by Mr. Lake who saw a great opportunity and potential. Over the years additional accommodations have been added making a total of 187, over half of which are suites. Upgrades and improvements to the golf course and Resort facilities have been ongoing through the years including major refurbishing of all the accommodations in 2004.
The East Conference Center was built in 1986 followed by a total renovation of the Clubhouse in 1987. At that time the entire interior and exterior of the building was remodeled including all public areas and offices. It soon became evident that there was need for additional meeting space. In 2002 the West Conference Center was built. This was a bold move as the Country was suffering from the aftermath of 9/11. Mr. Lake decided to go ahead with the construction and the new meeting and event space was well utilized from the day it opened in November of 2002.
The Resort has enjoyed a high volume of repeat business for many years largely due to the uniqueness of the property plus the great service and a friendly staff that treats guests in a gracious and welcoming manner.
The Arizona Golf Resort stands on 150 acres including the 18 hole, Par 72 Championship Golf Course with driving range and full practice facilities. Irrigation for the golf course comes from three lakes that are fed by the Resorts deep water wells.
